Sodium has gotten a bad reputation in the media. Nonetheless, it’s true that too much salt in your diet can lead to a myriad of health problems from hypertension to high blood pressure, which is a leading cause of heart disease. Finding low sodium recipes can be fun, though.

Up to 80% of the sodium in the Standard American Diet (it’s called “S.A.D.” for a reason) comes from processed food. Things that don’t taste salty can have a surprising amount of sodium. One jar of pasta sauce can contain more than a full day’s worth of sodium. Beware canned and jarred foods, where sodium is used as a preservative. Baked goods also tend to be high in sodium – but don’t taste salty because they have even more sugar than salt!

Remember, baking soda is really sodium bicarbonate; many leavening agents are sources of sodium. Did you know that a standard 4 oz. whole grain bagel has more than 500mg of sodium? Of course the sodium content is only one of many problems with eating a bagel…but that’s a story for another day.

Eliminate Sodium Naturally

The best diet plan eliminates sodium by avoiding packaged, over-processed “food products”. Our bodies need some sodium, but lots of foods contain sodium naturally – celery is a great source of sodium, as are bitter greens, artichoke hearts and beets.

There’s also a world of difference between sea salt and refined iodized table salt. Sea salt contains essential minerals that have been stripped from table salt and is metabolized by your body differently. Adding small amounts of sea salt is totally fine for a healthy eating plan.

If you’ve always considered yourself to be a “salt junkie”, it can be hard to give up your favorite white powder…but the health benefits are worth it!

Start slowly by reducing your intake. Don’t try to eliminate salt all at once. You can retrain your palate by transitioning slowly, and you’ll never miss it! Add spices and herbs instead of salt and experiment with different flavors. A squeeze of fresh lemon juice can really brighten the flavors of a lot of foods.

I wanted to share a few of my favorite low sodium seafood recipes with you. These are easy and delicious! Choose fresh, wild-caught seafood, when possible.

Broiled Cod (serves 2)
Ingredients:
2 white sea bass fillets, each 4 ounces
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon garlic, minced
1/4 teaspoon Celtic sea salt
Ground black pepper, to taste
Directions:
Preheat the broiler (grill). Position the rack 4 inches from the heat source.
Lightly coat baking pan with coconut oil. Place the fillets in the pan. Sprinkle the lemon juice, garlic, sea salt and pepper over the fillets.
Broil (grill) until the fish is opaque throughout when tested with a tip of a knife, about 8 to 10 minutes. Serve immediately.

Roasted Salmon (serves 2)
Ingredients:
2 pieces of 5-ounce pieces salmon with skin
2 teaspoons coconut oil
1 tablespoon chopped chives
1 tablespoon fresh tarragon leaves
Directions:
Preheat oven to 425 F. Line a baking sheet with foil.
Rub salmon all over with 2 teaspoons oil.
Roast skin side down on foil-lined baking sheet until fish is cooked through, about 12 minutes. (Check if fish flakes easily with fork after it bakes 10 minutes. Continue baking only if it doesn’t.)
Using a metal spatula, lift salmon off skin and place salmon on serving plate. Discard skin. Sprinkle salmon with herbs and serve.

Ginger Shrimp with Snow Peas (serves 2)
Ingredients:
3/4 teaspoon olive oil
1/2 large onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tablespoon and 1-1/2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger
1/4 cup and 2 tablespoons white wine
1/2 pound medium shrimp – peeled and de-veined
1/2 cup snow peas
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

Directions:
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Stir in onions, and cook until they turn golden brown, about 10 minutes.
Stir in the garlic and ginger, cook for 1 minute, then pour in wine, and bring to a boil.
Add the shrimp, and cook until they begin to turn pink, about 3 minutes.
Add snow peas, and cook until they begin to soften, about 2 minutes. Stir in chopped cilantro and serve immediately.

I hope you enjoy these quick and easy recipes!

Salmon recipes are basically dishes which are made up of salmon fish which are full of omega-3 and protein. Salmon might be one of the most easiest and quickest to cook fish recipes. These salmon recipes are widely cherished for its flavor. The primary thing while preparing salmon recipes is to use just the right components. Also, it is very imperative that you simply store up the salmon fish in the refrigerator till the time you decide to utilize it for cooking.

There are a number of techniques to cook salmon- it could possibly be baked, grilled, poached or broiled. Salmon fish is usually topped with many marinades, dressings and sauces to enhance the taste of the dish. Another key note is to not overcook, as this will cause the fish to be tough and dry.

Additionally, you should be sure that you are storing the salmon fish in freezer after washing them in chilly water. The salmon fish must also cut in to bite size pieces before storing in the freezer. Also, in an effort to thaw the salmon fish, you must take it out from your freezer and keep it inside the refrigerator for no less than one day before cooking. Make certain to not position the fish beneath lukewarm or frozen water.

Salmon fish is usually prepared along with the skin. It helps keep the fish together and makes it better and also prevent the salmon meat from curling. The exact way to check the doneness of salmon recipes would be to check if the meat changes color and turns flaky; one might check by just embedding a fork into the thickest part of the fillet and twisting it. See that the fish meat is detaching effortlessly; if yes then your salmon recipe is all set.

One of the foremost trusted and simple approach of cooking salmon recipe is always to broil the salmon fish. The oven rack ought to be prearranged six inches away the heat. You also can cover up the salmon fish and broiling pan by the very easily available parchment paper. This will assist you in washing the pan so easily.

In order to grill the salmon fish, standard cooking time for a whole fish is 20 minutes for every semi pound. Twist the fish once half way through the cooking procedure. The process of grilling salmon steaks or fillets follows a similar timing method to broiling the fish. The finest means is to make for at least 5 to 6 minutes on medium flame for each half inch of the salmon. Try rotating the steak or fillets only once. Make certain leftovers are refrigerated at once.

I am sure you have had those sudden hunger pangs where you want something fatty and deep fried or something creamy and sweet. These are the times where we go overboard with our calorie count and lose control on the number of calories that our ideal intake should be. This is something that you may encounter quite often and it is something that you have to learn to control. Otherwise, you will not be far away from the time when you have to restrain yourself from laying your hands on anything apart from the boring healthy food that your dietitian prescribed. This however, does not mean that anything that is healthy is not delicious. There are numerous low fat diet recipes that are equally healthy and tasty at the same time.

A good thing to consider when you eating from a restaurant or following low fat diet recipes at home is the portion that you are consuming. Quite often the food that they serve at the restaurant or the portions that come in those ready made packs are for more than one person. However, you may not realize how much you are consuming and hence end up doubling your calorie intake even if you are trying out some low fat diet recipes. So, it is essential that you take care of not only what you eat but also how much you eat. You may think that you are taking in just 90 calories while consuming that packet of soup but you are actually taking in 180 calories because the packet serves two.

If you are looking for some low fat diet recipes then this is the perfect place to be in. There are myriads of low fat diet recipes that are incredibly delicious and are equally healthy too so you can be completely guilt free after you have them. If you are like me and love chocolate then the chocolate cookies with luscious dark chocolate and sweetened dried cherries is the heaven for you. The best part is that this recipe has been modified to lower its calorie content by replacing milk chocolate with dark chocolate and using the cherries as the main sweetening agent instead of sugar. Also, reducing the amount of butter that you put in will also bring down the calorie content drastically.

Another one of my favourite low fat diet recipes is perfect for a quiet evening at home is the steak and low calorie mashed potatoes. Choose the lean portion of the steak so that you don’t consume too much of the fat. Make the mashed potatoes without cream. That will also bring down the calorie content to a minimum. For dessert, you can indulge in some strawberries dipped in molten dark chocolate. Sinful yet healthier that your creamy soufflés and sundaes. So you just need to be a little smart when it comes to selecting what you eat. If you apply your mind you food can be healthy as well as simply awesome when it comes to taste.

Sometimes you are in a hurry and you don’t have time to make party recipes and maybe you anyways don’t feel like eating something hot in the heart of summer. Some quick no-cooking food would be great then. But don’t forget to make certain that your party recipe is still healthy!

Salads are a great option for party recipes, and many of them are also very quick to prepare. If many of your ingredients are ready for use – for example canned vegetables or leftover meat – it’s easy to prepare a delicious and healthy salad within half an hour. If your salad doesn’t include pasta, rice or potatoes, make sure to serve it with bread, preferably whole grain, to include all major food groups into your meal.

Here are three quick and easy salad recipes which all can be done in 30 minutes. All make four servings. Entree salads may have either fried or grilled chicken fingers as well as seafood like fried or grilled shrimp placed on top of it. Fish steak, commonly tuna, salmon or mahi-mahi, can also be placed on top of the salad. Steaks like Sirloin can be sliced, grilled and placed over the entrée salad.

Salad dressings differ across cultures. Traditional salad dressings in Southern Europe are vinaigrettes; while in Russia and Eastern Europe, it is mayonnaise. In Denmark, salad dressings are based on the traditional recipes. Most of the light edible oil is typically used as salad dressing. These dinner recipes would include lots of oil.

Fish Recipes- Quickly Information

FISH provides another class of high-protein or tissue-building food. As this term is generally understood, it includes both vertebrate fish that is, fish having a backbone such as salmon, cod, shad etc. and many other water animals such as lobsters, crabs, shrimp, oysters and clams

As is well known, fish is an extremely perishable food. Therefore, when it is caught in quantities too great to be used at one time, it is preserved in various ways. As such methods are usually carried out in the locality where the fish is caught, many varieties of fish can be conveniently stored for long periods of time and so distributed as to meet the requirements of the consumer.

COMPOSITION and CLASSES OF FISH

In general, the composition of fish is similar to that of meat, for both of them are high-protein foods. In fish, as well as in shell fish, a very large proportion of the food substances present is protein. This proportion varies with the quantity of water, bone, and refuse that the particular food contains, and with the physical structure of the food. The varieties of fish that contain the most fat deteriorate most rapidly and withstand transportation the least. Fish containing a large amount of fat such as salmon, turbot, eel, herring, halibut, mackerel, mullet, butterfish and lake trout have a more moist quality than those which are without fat such as cod.

Classes of Fish

According to the quantity of fat it contains, fish may be divided into two classes, Dry, or lean fish, and Oily fish. Fish may also be divided into two classes, according to the water in which they live, fish from the sea being termed ‘salt-water fish’, and those from rivers and lakes are ‘fresh-water fish’.

FOOD VALUE OF FISH

The total food value of fish, as has been shown, is high or low, varying with the food substances it contains. Therefore, since weight for weight, the food value of fat is much higher than that of protein, it follows that the fish containing the most fat has the highest food value. Fat and protein, as is well known, do not serve the same function in the body, but each has its purpose and is valuable and necessary in the diet. So far as the quantity of protein is concerned, fish are valuable in their tissue-forming and tissue-building qualities. Nutritive value of fish may be lost in its preparation, if proper methods are not applied. To obtain as much food value from fish as possible, the various points that are involved in its cookery must be thoroughly understood. When the value of fish as a food is to be determined, its digestibility must receive definite consideration. Much depends on the way it is cooked. The ease with which fish is digested is influenced largely by the quantity of fat it contains. In addition to the correct cooking of fish and the presence of fat, a factor that largely influences the digestibility of this food is the length of the fibers of the flesh. It will be remembered that the parts of an animal having long fibers are tougher and less easily digested than those having short fibers.

PREPARATION OF FISH for COOKING

It is important to determine whether or not fish is fresh. Fish should not give off any offensive odor.

The first step for cleaning fish consists in removing the scales. With the fish scaled, proceed to remove the entrails. Then cut off the head, fins and tail if desired and wash it in cold water. Many recipes require fish to be cut into fillets, that is, thick and flat slices from which the bone is removed.

The fish which is now properly prepared, may be cooked at once or placed in the refrigerator until time for cooking. Salted slightly inside and out, it should be kept in a covered enamel or porcelain dish and then put in the compartment of the refrigerator from which odors cannot be carried to foods in the other compartments.

METHODS OF COOKING FISH

Fish may be boiled, steamed, baked, fried, broiled or sauted. The effect of these different methods is exactly the same on fish as on meat, since the two foods are the same in general construction. The cookery method to select depends largely on the size, kind, quality and flavor of the fish

Some quite a few recipes you can make on the go if the baits you brought with you aren’t doing the trick.
